Proper watering of your trees is critical if you want to enjoy them for years to come. After planting, all new trees need to be watered daily for the first week, but after that, the watering schedule varies depending on the type of tree, how old it is, and the season. Here is what you need to know about keeping your trees on a healthy watering schedule:
Tropical Trees
Tropical trees aren’t indigenous to the dry desert climate of Arizona, so they need frequent watering to stay healthy. For the first two years of its life, a tropical tree needs to be watered three times a week in the spring, five times per week in the summer, three times per week in the fall, and two times per week in the winter. Once tropical trees are over two years old, water them two to three times per week in the spring, four times in the summer, two to three times in the fall, and one to two times in the winter.
Sub-Tropical Trees
Though they are somewhat hardier than tropical trees, sub-tropical trees still need a strict watering schedule to thrive. For trees younger than two years, water two times per week in the spring and fall, every other day in the summer, and one time per week in the winter. For sub-tropical trees over two years old, water one or two times per week in the spring and fall, three to four times per week in the summer, and once every ten days in the winter.
Desert/Native Trees
These trees are suited to our desert climate and need less watering than other varieties. Trees need to be watered once a week in the spring and fall, two or three times per week in the summer, and one time every ten days in the winter when they are less than two years old. Once these trees are more than two years old, they need to be watered every ten days in the spring and fall, two or three times a week in the summer, and once every 14 days in the winter.
