Given our dry, sunny climate, it’s essential that you keep your plants well watered at all times during the spring and summer. Unfortunately, you can’t always be around to water your plants as often as you should.
In this short episode of Garden Time, irrigation expert Mark Bigej discusses the various kinds of drip irrigation systems. Once you figure out how many gallons per hour are available to you, you should find and assemble the appropriate drip system. If you’re looking to water large portions of your garden, you might consider installing a spray irrigation system instead.

Spring in Arizona is like summer everywhere else in the country. For this reason, a lot of plants and trees struggle in the hot, Arizona sun. Still, the Arizona climate can accommodate a wide number of beautiful desert trees. Here are a few desert trees that you should consider adding to your landscape this spring:
The acacia saligna tree is known for its stellar gold blossoms and its blue-silver leaves. This medium-sized Australia native can bring plenty of shade to your yard without taking up too much space. In order to give your acacia saligna plenty of time to grow, you should consider planting it very soon.
The sissoo tree is a unique variety of aspen that is native to the hottest parts of India. If you plant a sissoo tree within the next couple of weeks, you should see it grow to a staggering size by the time the dog days of summer come around. Like other desert trees, the sissoo tree thrives in full sun and requires very little water.
If you’re looking to add a little color to your yard, you might consider planting a beautiful desert willow. The sweet-smelling, trumpet-shaped blossoms of the desert willow can quickly turn your property into a lovely oasis—and it will only get more beautiful with each passing year.
If you’re looking for a tree to shade your whole yard, you’ll love the Chilean mesquite. Though your Chilean mesquite will be small at first, it will quickly grow into a majestic provider of shade. If you’re a fan of barbeques, you’ll be pleased to know that the tree bark makes an excellent fuel.
If you’d like to take a look at each of these trees for yourself, come by Moon Valley Nursery in Phoenix. We also have plenty of palm trees, flowering trees, shrubs, and much more. We won’t just help you find the right plants for your yard—we’ll help you plant them, too. Call us today at (602) 457-2176 if you have any questions.

If you’re a nature lover, then you probably want to be surrounded by beautiful, sweet-smelling plants at all times. Unfortunately, Arizona’s relative water scarcity can make it difficult for some plants to grow. Still, you can turn your yard into a glorious paradise if you have plants that are adapted to the Arizona heat. Here are just a few wonderful ground covers and vines that will thrive in your landscape:
If you’re looking to fill up the empty spaces in your landscape, you’ll be pleased with white, yellow, or purple lantana. Lantana is a hardy, fast-growing plant that looks lovely in any yard. You’ll also enjoy lantana’s beautiful blossoms spring through fall.
For a more laid-back ground cover plant, you should try pink or purple verbena. Verbena won’t spread as quickly as lantana, but it will give your landscape a light and lacy carpet of color. Like lantana, verbena blossoms spring through fall and stays very close to the ground so as not to overwhelm the other plants of your landscape.
If you’d like to give your property a more distinguished look, you should go with the simple green beauty of the creeping fig. Creeping fig is a very low-maintenance vine that can climb up rough surfaces. This particular vine is popular among homeowners partly because it doesn’t leave behind discarded blooms.
If you want a vine with a lot of color, then you’ll enjoy the bright orange blooms of cape honeysuckle. Cape honeysuckle is also very easy to train and looks lovely on trellises and arbors.
With the right vines and ground coverings, you could turn your landscape into a veritable utopia. For help selecting the right plants, come by one of Moon Valley Nursery’s seven Phoenix, Arizona locations. In addition to vines and ground coverings, we have a wide selection of trees, shrubs, and plants that are well adapted to our hot climate. To learn more, call us today at (602) 457-2176.

Planting a tree in your yard is a great way to add shade and increase the value of your property. However, planting a new tree is a lot more complicated than simply sticking it into the ground.
In this short video from Moon Valley Nurseries, tree expert Sal Bracale shows you how to plant a tree. First, it’s important that you know how big your tree will grow and where in your yard it will benefit the most. When you’re ready to plant, the top of the root ball should be flush with the ground.
Though ultimately rewarding, planting your own tree can be very hard work. If you want a professional to plant your tree for you, call Moon Valley Nursery at (602) 457-2176. If you live in the Phoenix area, let Moon Valley help you with your landscape design needs.
